Let’s Live It Up The Traditional Games Of Our Culture




Nature of strong community in Malaysia is shown in many of their traditional games and hobbies. This activity is still performed by the local people on the afternoon or an evening when there is a festive activity in the neighbourhood such as before or after the rice harvest or on a marriage event.



Sepak Takraw




Also known as the sport of “sepak raga”, it is a traditional ball game where a ball, made of bamboo, played by the players using any part of the body except the arms and hands. There are two types of “sepak takraw” which is circles and nets. Sepak raga is the original form of the game where players form a circle and try to keep the ball in the air as long as possible. It is also a modern version of the sport where the ball was sent high over the net played by a team.


Wau



Wau is very popular kite flying activity especially in Kelantan, East Coast of Malaysia. According to tradition, It was flown after the rice harvest season; large wau is sometimes of humans size - measuring 3.5 meters from head to tail. It is called so because its shape is similar to the Arabic alphabet called "wau". With the colorful and pattern-based flora and fauna, this kite looks so beautiful when it is flying high on the sky.


Gasing



Gasing is a game of spin the thing. Traditionally played before the rice harvest, the game requires strength, coordination and skill. The top set spinning by pulling out the rope that was tied around it. Then it picked up from the ground, while still spinning, using a wooden paddle and moved to the lower pole with an iron container. If thrown by a professional, it can be turned around for 2 hours.

There are many traditional games and activities in our country. Not only it is able to fills leisure time with beneficial things, it also could strengthen the community and it plays an important role in shaping our country.
